McSisters Tackle Plastic

End Plastic Soup

A big thing is happening ‘Down Under’ (as in Australia) for one of the McSisters in a few weeks.  We McSisters are engaged with several organizations providing education, awareness, advocacy, and innovations about the deepening plastic crisis.  Barbara and Frances belong to their local Rotary clubs. and are deeply involved with the environmental work of Rotary locally and globally.

By 2050 there is expected to be more plastic than fish in the ocean, by weight.  This should be extremely alarming to all of us.  Rotarians are taking action across the globe.   “End Plastic Soup” (EPS) is a global environmental initiative started by the Rotary Clubs of Amsterdam. The goals of End Plastic Soup are:

  • To insure that by 2050 there is no more plastic soup in the oceans, seas and there is no more plastic waste in our lakes, rivers, forests, parks and streets.

  • To continue to work together worldwide with Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs to solve and prevent the plastic pollution problem throughout the full cycle.

  • To continue to build End Plastic Soup as a group of people of action: start today, step by step together.

  • To continue to think globally and act locally

  • To continue to work inside and build relationships outside of Rotary.

End Plastic Soup  provides a great deal of education about plastic, including the production  of plastic, the impacts of plastic on  the environment, human health, and climate, and the elimination of plastic, including  the truth about recycling. Plastic recycling  does not work.  End Plastic Soup also collaborates with other organizations to develop and implement innovative processes to clean up discarded plastics and prevent the flow into the ocean.

One of the significant aspects of End Plastic Soup is the support of the ever-growing network of young ambassadors, talented young people who are committed to fighting plastic pollution and creating a better environment for all of us. They are our future leaders and deserve our support. EPS supports the activities and projects of the young activists. The young ambassadors raise awareness of End Plastic Soup in their home countries, and some have spoken at the United Nations and to leaders in their own countries to enact policies and demand action.  By working with young ambassadors, we can create a far greater impact and even more awareness.  We can all honor the work of these young people by doing better and creating a healthier future for them.

The big thing happening Down Under is that we are proud to announce that Barbara is co-presenting the End Plastic Soup program at the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, Australia. We are grateful for this opportunity to bring awareness of the plastic crisis to an international community.

What can you do?

  • Co-founder Gert-Jan van Dommelen’s motto is “You can start today”

  • Use less plastic every day and pick up a piece of plastic waste every day from the street, beach or waterfront. Together with 1.2 million Rotarians (and family, friends) we can reduce plastic waste! Tell your family, friends and colleagues about the problem and join us.

  • Increase your own awareness.

  • Take action across the full life cycle of plastic.  There are many suggestions throughout our blog.
