McSisters Tackle Plastic

Get the real poop here and take action !

You may have noticed if you are passionate and committed to making a difference in an area of life that is important to you, that not everyone feels the same.  It can be a bit frustrating at times.  But you don’t give up.  You have a conversation with someone and discover they share your passion too.  This was one of those weeks for the McSisters where different conversations led to some new actions to reduce and eliminate the use of plastic.  It’s a good thing we McSisters love to talk about our commitment to reduce single-use plastic.

Barbara shared with a new acquaintance about McSisters Tackle Plastic, which led to talking about “no plastic” products, which led to talking about toilet paper, and the destructiveness of Costco ‘s “F” rated toilet paper.  Costco toilet paper is wrapped in lots of plastic and is made primarily from trees from the virgin Boreal forests in Canada, host to endangered wildlife and plants.  This new acquaintance had no idea about the source of Costco paper.  And, now she knows about one of our favorite products – “Who Gives a Crap” an “A” rated toilet paper.  With education, knowledge, and enthusiasm, comes understanding that leads to new actions. Maybe next time you wipe your bum with “F” rated toilet paper you will be moved to switch to “A” rated toilet paper like Who Gives a Crap!!

By the way, Who Gives a Crap gets an “A” because it sells toilet paper made with recycled paper or bamboo, and sends it to your door with no plastic packaging.   We like this company because they have donated to date nearly $8.5 million in US dollars to provide access to toilets and clean water in places around the world.  And their website and ads are very fun!

Frances discovered, to her delight, another organization committed to addressing plastic.  Break Free From Plastic is a global movement that includes 12,000 organizations working to tackle plastic from extraction to disposal.  A nationwide study they conducted in 2018 to 2022 aggregated 2,125,415 items of plastic waste from 2,373 separate collections across the United States. In each year, the study documented PepsiCo as either the number one or number two producer of branded plastic trash collected across the United States.

Government leaders are also committed to cleaning up plastic, reducing the use of plastic, reducing the production of plastic, and holding those accountable for the plastic mess we are in.  Knowledge led to more actions.   Just last week, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against PepsiCo Inc. seeking penalties for harming the public and the environment with its single-use plastic packaging that is polluting the Buffalo River.

And even more actions.  In October 2023, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Jared Huffman (D-CA) in October 2023 introduced the “Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act”, a bill to establish source reduction and other efforts to reduce plastic, and to require big corporations to take responsibility for their pollution.

What can you do?
