Join the kids-plastic free lunch day is back!
We McSisters are big fans of Cafeteria Culture (https://www.cafeteriaculture.org) and have written blogs about them previously. Each year Cafeteria Culture plans a nationwide plastic free lunch day. It’s that time again for Plastic Free Lunch Day and we want to encourage our subscribers to participate. Of course, we encourage you to make every lunch plastic free!
The focus of Cafeteria Culture is creating plastic free lunch days in our schools across the nation. Dr. Jenny Davies, Public and Environmental Health Director and Special Projects Coordinator for Cafeteria Culture, wrote to us recently with this message:
It’s the start of a new school year, and we want to give you advance notice of the next Plastic Free Lunch Day: November 8, 2023and April 2024 (TBD). Please join us! Together, we can help turn off the tap!
Nationwide, schools serve 7.35 billion meals annually, often with 7 - 10 single use plastics in a single-meal. Because there is no effective waste management strategy for plastics, they are with us forever.
Plastic Free Lunch Day (PFLD) is a great opportunity for students to lead a very doable no-cost plastic reduction action in their school. This simple action has powerful ripple effects. And we have plenty of free how-to materials to get you started:
You can view the movie Microplastic Madness free with your class from October 1 until November 30, 2023. Sign up here for a free screening, available in dubbed versions (Japanese & German) and subtitled versions (Spanish, Japanese, German, Russian & Mandarin).
Check out all the ideas in our Quick Start K-12 & College Student packet. There’s an action for everyone! More resources at www.PlasticFreeLunch.org.
We love to hear from you! Please share your ideas and suggestions with us.
I hope you’ll join us! It will be lots of fun, and we have great support materials for students and teachers.
Warm regards, Jenny
