Throw a party but don’t invite the Plastic

We McSisters love to party. Our family parties often include live bagpipe, bassoon, keyboard, and guitar music. So much fun!

But we are here to talk about single-use plastic.

Parties are often in celebration of a birthday or perhaps a cause.

What better gift than a contribution to a healthier environment for our collective future.

What can you do?  So many things and it’s so easy!!

  •  Tablecloths: Paper, cloth, or butcher paper that can be colored and decorated by party guests.

  •  Beverages: Use reusable metal cups, paper cups not lined with plastic, or when possible actual glass.  Buy drinks in metal cans or glass that can be recycled.

  • Wine glasses: Mix and match wine glasses from thrift shops.

  •  Utensils: Consider purchasing thrift shop mix-and-match utensils easily washed and reused.

  •  Plates: Use paper plates not lined with plastic. You can purchase thrift shop mix-and-match plates.

  •  Balloons: Please no balloons. Consider decorations from natural products or flowers. Search online for paper balloons and you will see beautiful options. Here is an idea: https://www.lightinthebox.com/en/p/10pcs

  •  Gifts: Wrap gifts in paper that can be recycled or use paper or reusable cloth bags. Consider gifts that can be consumed, reused, or choose something from our product suggestions in the ‘products and references’ page of our blog.

  •  Food: When attending a potluck, do your best to avoid plastic packaging and plastic wrap.  There are lots of alternative ideas throughout our blog.

  •  Children’s parties: Consider throwing a party that teaches children about conservation. See all the above suggestions. Avoid plastic party bags and little plastic toys completely. They are likely thrown in the trash when the child gets home.  Consider a tray of dirt, plants, and biodegradable pots.  This is an activity and a party gift.  What better way to show your children your love than to show the planet your love.
